The President PratibhaDevisinghPatil, who is the Visitor of Mizoram University (MZU) presided over the 6th Convocation of Mizoram University held yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Campus at Tanhril as the Chief Guest. The Chief Rector of the University, the Governor of Mizoram Lt. Gen.(Rtd.) M MLakhera, and the Chief Minister LalThanhawla as the Guest of Honour, were also present at the Convocation.
In her address at the Convocation, the President told the students that education does not end merely with the acquisition of degrees but is a process that goes life-long, and the motto of the University 'Greater Deeds Remain' aptly elaborates it. She commended that the University, set up in 2001 has made a lot of progress and said that the University should organize short term courses in floriculture, horticulture, mushroom cultivation, which can benefit the local populace; and added that research should be encouraged to document the rich biodiversity of the state.
The President said that Universities are important instruments of change in society and the Government is paying a lot of attention to institutions of higher learning. Further she said that the quality of a University is measured by the work culture of its faculty and that they can guide students in facing the challenges of the world in an effective way. The President urged students to give their best and do their bit for society as well.
Speaking at the Convocation ceremony, the Governor said that for a state that had its first High School in 1944 and its first college in 1958, becoming the state with the second most literate state is indeed a matter of pride. The Governor said that the geographical location of Mizoram poses a challenge to students in getting access to disciplines such as medicine for which there are only 37 MBBS seats allocated to it and stressed the need to set up a Medical College in the state and requested the President to render help in this regard.
The Chief Minister who also spoke on the occasion said that the University which has come up, as a result of the Mizoram Peace Accord is making a lot of progress in furthering education in Mizoram. He urged the faculty to widen the scope of research programmes undertaken in the University and hoped that with time and the right direction Mizoram University can become well known in the country. Congratulating the students, he asked them to use their knowledge in the development of the state and the country.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. N. Rai chaired the Convocation and the Registrar Benjamina delivered the vote of thanks.
At today's Convocation, 320 students were awared Degrees, among them 13 Book Prize Winners, 27 Gold Medallists, 5 Ph.d's and 6 M. Phil's. The Convocation was attended by the Speaker, Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, M.P. (LokSabha), MLA's, besides the Chief Secretary and other senior officials.
The President left Aizawl late in the afternoon for Agartala from Lengpui Airport.
