Aizawl, the 16th March 2022: After joining his new post as Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT)Prof S. Sundar called on Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan, today. Prof S. Sundar is the former Head of Department, Department of Mathematics, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

After learning details on the current status of NIT Mizoram from his guest, Governor Hari Babu expressed his high expectation for the growth and progress of NIT under the new Director. He urged the new Director to increase the size of the faculty from the existing 38 posts which are just about 50% of sanctioned posts, to increase the student’s intake as per the student-teacher ratio guidelines in the NITs. He also requested the NIT Mizoram to speed up the process for getting approval for the construction of the infrastructures at the proposed site.

During his interview with the Governor, Prof S. Sundar gave a short briefing of his immediate objectives and vision for NIT Mizoram. He shared his goal of developing NIT Mizoram as the sought-after destination for Tech students. He also revealed that the NIT Mizoram is currently corresponding with IIT Madras to find areas for collaboration and are trying chalking out MOU together. Prof S. Sundar was very optimistic about having a permanent campus for NIT Mizoram at the proposed site in the near future even though he admitted the work is getting delayed by pending Environmental Clearance. In this regard, he requested continued support of the Governor and the Government of Mizoram.

The Ministry of Education (Shiksha Mantralaya), Govt. of India vide its order no. F. 23-13-2009-TS-III Dated 30th of Oct. 2009 and 3rd March 2010, had decided to set up ten new NITs. In view of the above NIT Mizoram was started in the year 2010 in the state of Mizoram with an objective to impart education, research & training leading to B.Tech, M.Tech & PhD. degrees. This institute has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament. The students are admitted through All India Entrance Exam- Joint Entrance Exam (JEE Main).

Prof S. Sundar was accompanied by Dr Lalthanchami Sailo, Registrar, NIT.
