Pu Lal Thanzara, Parliamentary Secretary(Power & Electricity), attended the 9th meeting of the 9th North East Regional Power Committee held at Hotel Pinewood in Shillong today, and addressed the meeting  where he highlighted the problems faced by Mizoram in the power sector and the measures that can be taken to revise the power allocation for Mizoram.
Addressing the meeting, Pu Lal Thanzara pointed the peak power demand of Mizoram is about 100 MW and that out of the 65 MW alloted to Mizoram from the share of Central Power Projects, Mizoram recieves only about 30-40 MW, due to which Mizoram faces perennial power shortage. He apprised the meeting  that  the even though the 22.92 MW Bairabi Thermal Power Plant, had been allocated  as Available Firm Power, by the Ministry of Power  but due to the high cost of furnace oil and the fund constraint for purchase of fuel, it is constantly kept in stand-by mode. He  requested for the upward revision of power allocation excluding the Bairabi Thermal Plant  as available firm power.

With reference to capacity addition in Mizoram, he said that the work on the stalled, 60 MW Tuirial HEP will be resumed soon, as the PIB had cleared the execution work and that Tuivai HEP(210 MW) will be taken up as a Pilot Project to be executed on Public Private Partnership(PPP) mode. He informed the meeting that Memoranda of Agreements (MOAs) have been signed with NTPC for construction of Kolodyne Phase II HEP(460 MW) on 22nd Dec 2008, with NEEPCO for investigation, preparation of DPRs and sunsequent execution of Chhimtuipui HEP(635 MW), Lungreng HEP(815 MW) and Mat HEP(76 MW) on 26th March 2010.
