Seed treatment campaign was organised at Lengte village, Reiek block, Mamit district on 20.12.2024 by CIPMC, Aizawl. During the programme, the technical staff has demonstrated the treatment of seeds with biocontrol agents (Trichoderma viride) and briefed about the importance of seed treatment prior to sowing to protect seeds against pests and diseases, to prevent pest and diseases that attack crops during their early growth stage.

Prevention is a key step in Integrated Pest Management(IPM) and is the first line of defence against harmful organisms on your crops. Seed treatment is a preventive measure. In an IPM approach, seed treatment plays a crucial role in preventing pests and diseases right from the beginning. Seed treatment is the application of insecticides, fungicides, nematicides also biocontrol agents(biopesticides) to seeds before sowing. Its goal is to protect the seeds and future seedlings from pests and diseases. These harmful organisms are usually very destructive when not managed in time. Indeed, crops are the most susceptible to attacks in their early growth. Seed treatment can reduce or delay the need for crop protection products like insecticides, fungicides, nematicides also biocontrol agents as crops are already protected against some pests and pathogens. In addition, seed treatment targets pests directly at the source, unlike foliar spraying methods. Seed treatment helps maintain a balance between pest control and environmental sustainability. Therefore, Seed treatment method is eco-system friendly, reduce input cost & time saving.

By adopting seed treatment method, farmers can promote sustainable agriculture and enhance their crop productivity in a responsible and environmentally-friendly way.
