Sports and Youth Services Minister Shri Robert Romawia Royte held discussions with Shri Sandip Pradhan, Director General, Sports Authority of India and his colleagues this morning via video conferencing to discuss the modalities and timelines for organizing Khelo India Football Girls League in Mizoram. The League intends to scouts women footballers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup (under 17) to be held in November next year across four cities in the country.

Welcoming the initiative of SAI geared at promoting women’s football in the country, Sports Minister Shri Robert Romawia Royte said that Mizoram has an excellent track record regarding the achievement of men’s football and highlighted recent wins of Mizoram at the national level. He expressed his commitment in making the League a grand success and ideated that instead of holding just the state level league championship, Mizoram would go further and organize District Level League championships with active support of Mizoram Football Association and its District associations. This idea was welcomed by Shri Sandip Pradhan and congratulated Mizoram for being the first state to express its willingness in organizing the League among 16 states that SAI has selected for holding League championships.

The meeting which was attended by officials of Sports and Youth Services Department, Mizoram State Sports Council, SAI North East Regional Centre, Imphal and representatives of Mizoram Football Association discussed various issues towards organizing the League and committed to starting the League by next month in Mizoram.

I-League CEO Shri Sunando Dhar who also attended the meeting highlighted the recent initiative of Reliance Foundation in selecting women footballers for the Indian Team in the World Cup and said Mizoram figured high in the list for scouting of talent for the women’s team.
