Aizawl, the 6thNovember 2021 : Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court, who is also the Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) graced a Legal Awareness Campaign organised by Mizoram State Legal Services Authority and High Court Legal Services Committee, Gauhati High Court, Aizawl Bench at Rawpuichhip village in Mamit District.

 

Addressing the gathering Justice Uday Umesh Lalit remarked that legal awareness programmes must reach every nook and corner and such campaigns galvanise actions and help to assess whether they are reaching out to all sections of society in all parts of the country. He further remarked that the bulk of the country’s population, which lives in villages, are often not aware of their rights and such programmes address this gap. He noted that in the last 25 years NALSA’s scope and sphere of activity has expanded beyond court-based litigation and now it includes various other legal aids such as Lok Adalats and other alternative dispute resolution.  

 

Judges of the Gauhati High Court – Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Nelson Sailo also addressed the legal awareness campaign. As a part of the campaign, resource person Julie Lalrinzami, Chief Judicial Magistrate Aizawl and  Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Aizawl presented her paper themed on various legal aspects of “The Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014”, the POCSO Act 2012 and defamation suits which have increased due to proliferation and misuse of social media.
