448/2026-2027
Aizawl, 14 October 2026: Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, today visited the ongoing construction of the Aizawl Bypass on the Western Side, being undertaken under the PM-DeVINE Scheme.
Dr. Majumdar first visited the Sihhmui base camp, where he interacted with officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the contractors executing the road construction. He was informed that the road construction work was scheduled to be completed by January 2028. The Minister directed the contractor to ensure completion within the stipulated timeframe and instructed them to deploy additional labourers and machinery at the project site.
Considering the strategic importance of the project in facilitating the planned expansion of Aizawl city and easing the heavy traffic congestion within the city, he also stated that an additional approach road connecting Aizawl city to the Bypass Road may be constructed using funds from the State Government.
PWD officials stated that the proposed bypass would provide better and more convenient connectivity to Lengpui Airport, Sairang Railway Station, the Industrial Growth Centre at Luangmual, Zoram Medical College and Hospital, and southern Mizoram. They further stated that the road would pass near the approach road to Reiek, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mizoram, thereby significantly promoting tourism. The improved road connectivity would also facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce and provide better livelihood opportunities for people living in the surrounding areas.
The PWD officials also pointed out that the ongoing project did not include provisions for tourism-oriented road infrastructure and beautification of the surrounding areas. They therefore requested that a new project incorporating these components be included under the forthcoming PM-DeVINE Scheme. They stated that, if approved, the initiative would greatly enhance the aesthetic appeal of the bypass and significantly improve road safety for both motorists and tourists.
An amount of ₹500 crore was sanctioned on 10 February, 2024 for the construction of the Aizawl Bypass on the Western Side under the PM-DeVINE Scheme. RG Buildwell Engineers Pvt. Ltd. was selected as the contractor, and the notice to commence work was issued on 16 January 2026.
The project involves the construction of a 45-kilometre road, starting from Sihhmui in Sairang and terminating at Muallungthu. As of the present date, 33.61 per cent of the construction work has been completed. The road construction is scheduled to be fully completed by 16 January 2028.
