The World Bank funded Aizawl - Thenzawl - Lunglei Road was inaugurated yesterday afternoon by the Chief Minister Shri Lal Thanhawla at Melriat.
The 164 kilometre road was constructed at a cost of Rs. 538.401 crores with assistance from the World Bank. Chief Minister Shri Lal Thanhawla had taken the initiative for construction of the road way back in June 1997 and work commenced in October 1998. But a strain in Indo-US relations then, resulted in the work almost coming to a standstill. The work commenced full swing again in 2002.
With the completion of the road, the distance between Aizawl, the capital city and Lunglei, the second largest town has been cut down by 71 kilometres from the earlier 235 km via Serchhip - Hnahthial. The journey now takes about 5 hours instead of 8 hours via the old road. The Highway is a an intermediate lane with a road breadth of 5.5 metres.
The function was attended by Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and MLAs, besides senior government offcials.
