The 8th Mizoram University Sports Meet 2009 concluded today with a final football match between Govt. Aizawl College and Pacchunga University College followed by a closing function at the 10 Assam Rifles Ground. Mizoram Governor Lt.Gen. M.M. Lakhera, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, who is also the University Rector, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Mizoram University Vice-Chancellor Prof.A.N. Rai also graced the closing function alongwith his lady wife.
Speaking at the closing function, the Governor first of all congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, staff and students for the excellent and peaceful conduct of the Sports Meet. He pointed out that today Mizoram University is being viewed as a model university because of the excellent progress it has made in academics or other student activities, and every citizen of Mizoram should take pride in this. Reminding the University faculty and students that they were ambassadors of the state, the Governor said that Mizoram has successfully maintained an excellent peace accord, hence we should be careful lest our words or actions mar the good image that the state enjoys before the rest of the world. He also informed the gathering that Mizoram University is soon to host a Vice-Chancellors’ Meet, in which 14 Vice-Chanellors from well-known Universities across the country will be participating. “We must prove to our guests that Mizoram is not only a state of peace and communal harmony but also the ideal seat of education. Remember we are second to none,” said the Governor, whose words of encouragement brought a huge round of applause from the University faculty and students.
MZU Vice-Chancellor Prof. A.N.Rai also congratulated the Sports Meet Organisers for its peaceful conclusion and the real spirit of sportsmanship that prevailed throughout the Meet. He lauded all the Principals of participating colleges for ensuring that friendship among their students remained intact. Saying “For me, you are all winners”, Prof. Rai announced that winners of individual and team events during the Sports Team will represent the Mizoram University at the approaching East Zone Varsity Sports Meet and urged them to shine once again by bringing back many medals.
More than 1000 students from 18 colleges participated in the Sports Meet and competed in 7 sports disiplines - football, hockey, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and chess. Govt. Hrangbana College, Aizawl was declared Over-all Champion bagging 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze. Pachhunga University College came 2nd with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Govt. Saiha College stood 3rd with 2 Gold.
Today’s football final match was won by Pachhunga University College with a score of 2-1 against Govt. Aizawl College. Prizes to winners in the different categories were given away by the Governor and Mrs. A.N.Rai.
