250/2026-2027
Aizawl, 22 July 2026: Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma today released a Festschrift titled "Zawhzawzo Val"—a commemorative volume containing scholarly writings on Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte by eminent academics—along with two other books associated with the noted scholar at a function held at BSI Hall, Bible House, Aizawl.
The two books released were "Lalzika leh Vanthangi", an English translation of the Mizo drama, authored by Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte, and "Teaching of Mizo Language in Secondary School," co-authored by Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte and Dr. Lalramliana. The Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University, Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, the Guest of Honour, also released the Bengali translation of "Pasaltha Khuangchera."
In his address, the Chief Minister said that Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte is widely respected among the Zo people for his scholarship and immense contributions to literature and education. He remarked that Prof. Khiangte's legacy would have been firmly established even through his achievements in academics and education alone, while his extensive literary works have further enriched Mizo society.
He recalled having shared many conversations with the author over the years, during which he had often expressed his wish to see more Mizo literary works translated into other languages. He noted that the release of the English translations of "Pasaltha Khuangchera" and "Lalzika & Vanthangi" represented the fulfilment of one of those aspirations.
Emphasising the importance of promoting Mizo literature globally, the Chief Minister said that as many Mizo literary works as possible should be translated into English, Hindi, Bengali and other major world languages, and made available on the internet. Such efforts, he said, would not only promote Mizoram and the Mizo people internationally but would also contribute to preserving and strengthening the Mizo language.
He further stressed the need to increase the amount of Mizo-language content available online. A larger digital repository of Mizo words and their English and Hindi equivalents, he said, would greatly support the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Mizo language and facilitate more accurate translations between Mizo and other languages.
Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte has represented Mizoram extensively at academic forums across India and abroad, often serving as one of the State's foremost literary ambassadors. Through both Christian and secular writings, he has made significant contributions to promoting Mizo culture, language, literature and social issues beyond the State.
According to the Festschrift, of the 40 plays written by Prof. Khiangte, 20 have already been translated into Hindi and 10 into English. In addition to around 20 plays and another 20 prose works, about 10 of the poems he has translated have been included in the curricula of approximately five universities across India, with many of these works also translated into several other languages.
