30th May 2024: ‘Cyclone Remal' in the form of heavy rains and storm has hit the entire NER including Mizoram on 27th & 28th May 2024. Fortunately, the intensity in Lawngtlai District was much subdued, however causing house/school damage, landslides and mudslides at isolated places along the highway leaving out dear life and property.
In the wake of the cyclone, the District Administration/District Disaster Management Authority of Lawngtlai District mobilised all its resources and manpower to closely monitor the development of the cyclone and any incident affected. The Deputy Commissioner, incident commanders and SDOs of Lawngtlai (Sadar), Chawngte and Sangau Sub-Divisions visited various sites within their jurisdiction and coordination was made at all levels to address the various issues that could aggravate viz.,
1. Road was blocked at KMMTTP Rulkual Junction and other places due to mudslide/landslide on 27th & 28th May 2024. As soon as the District Administration received the report, concerned departments/MPWD/ Contractors were informed and clearance of debris was exercised right away. Excavators/loaders were deployed and stationed at various sites along the highway to clear debris as erratic landslides occurred due to incessant rains.
2. On 28th May 2024, landslides and mudslides occurred at various locations along the NH-54 highway between Lawngtlai and Siaha blocking the road and stranding some vehicles and passengers in the area. Concerned departments/MPWD/Contractors were informed of the incident and clearance of debris was conducted accordingly. Road was temporarily closed by the District Authority due to excessive landslide. Food and essential provisions were provided to stranded passengers. Due to continuous rains and erratic mudslides, debris has been cleared overnight. The road is completely cleared for travelling between Lawngtlai and Kawlchaw West (Lawngtlai District) as of today. In case of any upcoming eventualities, District Administration is keeping close vigil on all sites.
3. On 28th May 2024, Lawngtlai to Tuipui Ferry Road collapsed due to landslide. Vehicles could not ply and the road was temporarily closed. Concerned departments/MPWD/Contractors were informed of the incident and clearance of debris was done right away. The road is temporarily repaired and made pliable as of now.
4. In the morning of 27th May 2024, Mualbu ‘L’ Upper Primary School collapsed as the cyclonic storm hit the village. Preliminary report was received by District Administration and necessary action is taken accordingly.
The District Administration expresses its heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and NGOs who extended help and support voluntarily and selflessly during such trying times. It appreciates the full cooperation of government departments, officials and contractors and the support of the public.
The District Administration also appeals and urges the public to be cautious and aware of government advisories during these times to ensure public safety, and to inform any incidents to the incident commanders for quick response.
