Lunglei District, along with the rest of the State, observed the Green Mizoram Day 2022 with an inaugural function and ceremonial tree planting held at Polytechnic Campus, Hrangchalkawn.  Pu Lawmawma Tochhawng, Lunglei HPC Vice Chairman inaugurated Green Mizoram Day 2022 for Lunglei District, and led the ceremonial planting of tree saplings in honor of the Day.

In his inaugural speech, the HPC Vice Chairman highlighted the trend of decreasing forest cover and biodiversity loss that Mizoram, along with other North East States, has suffered over the years. Stating that protecting our forests and wildlife at any cost is the need of the hour, especially given the outbreak of devastating forest fires in various parts of the State in 2021, the HPC Vice Chairman encouraged those present to continue to be active crusaders for the environment.

The inaugural program was chaired by Lunglei DC & Chairman District Green Mizoram Committee Pu Kulothungan A, with a report from Lunglei DFO & Member Secretary District Green Mizoram Committee Pu PC Lalchhandama; Pu Lalrotluanga, President Sub Hqrs YMA concluded with a vote of thanks.

As is done at Green Mizoram Day function every year, awards were distributed under different categories viz 'Best Village towards the prevention of domestic and forest fire', Best Planting Agency under two categories – Government and NGO & Others & Essay writing competition for school students. This year’s winners under different categories are as below:

The inaugural function was followed by ceremonial tree planting, with the dignitaries and invitees planting saplings in the MPL Campus. In honor of the day, 43 planting agencies planted 376 seedlings in the campus. Various planting agencies within the District have stepped out in their respective planting areas to clear undergrowth and repair sapling protectors.

Green Aizawl program was started in the year 1998 with an aim to improve green cover in and around Aizawl. The program was extended throughout the state in 1999. 11^th June has been fixed as Green Mizoram Day since 2014.
