Aizawl, 16th November, 2021 : A five-day event “International Workshop-cum-Conference on Mathematics Education”, jointly organised by Mizoram University and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, was inaugurated last night at 6:00 PM local time (IST). Prof KRS Sambasiva Rao, Vice Chancellor, Mizoram University graced the inaugural function as Chief Guest and Dr. Oscar Blanco Alonso, Secretary Academics, University of Guadalajara, Mexico and Dr Lalzirmawia Chhangte IAS, Secretary, School Education, Govt. of Mizoram were the Guests of Honour. The event is jointly sponsored by Human Resources Development Board, Govt. of Mizoram and Mizoram Mathematics Society (MMS).

The inaugural function started with welcome address by Prof. Jamal Hussain, the coordinator from Mizoram University, who expressed his wish to come out with some concrete measures to improve teaching and learning of Mathematics in Mizoram as a result of deliberation of international experts and panel discussions during the course of the event.

Prof. KRS Sambasiva Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Mizoram University who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and congratulated the organizers for this important Workshop-cum-Conference. He mentioned that Mathematics should be a compulsory subject rather than optional in school level. He suggested to engage good teachers and to take initiative for professional development of existing teachers in schools.

Guest of Honour, Pu Lalzirmawia Chhangte IAS, Secretary, School Education Department addressed the participants and explained the history and current status of Mathematics Education in Mizoram. He appealed to the stockholders to take initiatives and improved Mathematics education in Mizoram.

Guest of Honour, Dr. Oscar Blanco Alonso, Secretary Academics, University of Guadalajara, Mexico in his speech expressed great satisfaction about the event and appealed to carry forward academic collaboration between the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and Mizoram University under the MoU signed between the two universities.

Prof. Berinderjeet Kaur from Singapore greeted and welcomed all the experts and participants from different parts of the world and emphasized on the need of such deliberation for motivating young students towards the important discipline of Mathematics. Immediately after the inaugural function, in her Keynote address, Prof. Kaur explained various initiatives that Singapore has successfully implemented to improve teaching and learning of Mathematics. She explained many successful methodologies that make students learn mathematics with understanding and fun.

Prof. Carmona from the University of Texas, USA also addressed the gathering and expressed the importance of these interaction to help students learn and enjoy mathematics.

Prof. Diwakar Tiwari, Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Mizoram University in his speech expressed his happiness for organizing the workshop cum conference and hoped that it will improve mathematics education in Mizoram.

Prof. Surajit Borkotokey from Dibrugarh University, Assam also delivered his speech and suggested that initiatives should be taken in light with NEP of Govt. of India, which has emphasized on Mathematics Education and improve the same.

Mizoram University and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico have signed MoU recently for academic collaborations. Under the MoU, the two universities wanted to organize a joint event on Mathematics Education for improving teaching and learning in Schools in general and the schools of Mizoram in particular. The workshop-cum-conference is organised with the objective to discuss the issue of Mathematics phobia among young students. The workshop will focus on various methods including the use of ICT and application of Mathematical modeling in teaching and learning of Mathematics.

On 19th November, 2021 (Friday), Pu L.Thangmawia, Vice Chairman, Human Resources Development Board, Govt. of Mizoram will deliver a presentation on the growth of Mathematics in Mizoram.
