In a short programme held at his office chamber, the Minister for Local Administration Department, Pu K.Lalrinliana today released grants amounting to Rs.45.44 crores to village councils in 6 districts of Mizoram excluding 6th Schedule areas. District Local Administration Officers (DLAOs) from each District received the grants on behalf of the Village Councils .

The 14th Finance Commission did not recommend grants to areas outside Part IX and Part IXA of the Indian Constitution which includes Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland. However, the Commission recommended and urged the Union Government to consider larger, sustained and more effective intervention to bring such areas on par with other areas. On the backdrop of this recommendation, the Government of Mizoram, after obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, submitted a proposal to the Union Finance Ministry. A sum of Rs.45.44 crores grant was subsequently released by the Finance Ministry to be distributed among all the Village Councils in Mizoram except for those governed by the 6th Schedule.
