Lunglei Deputy Commissioner Pu V.Lalsangliana, IAS today held a Press Conference at the DC Conference Hall where he announced the detection of the first Covid-19 positive case in the District. He was accompanied by Lunglei SP Pu Stephen Lalrinawma, CMO Dr Thani Pachuau, Medical Superintendent DR SR Ngurchamliana and SMO Dr Lalrinthangi.

Before taking questions from the media, the Deputy Commissioner thanked and commended them for their sincere cooperation and speedy dissemination of information and communication regarding the pandemic to the people. He announced the detection of the first Covid-19 positive case in Lunglei District by the Testing Laboratory at Zoram Medical College, Falkawn late last night. The patient had returned from Delhi, and had reached Lunglei on the morning of 1st June, 2020. After medical screening and other requisite formalities, she was admitted to the Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM) Community Quarantine Centre at Ramthar. Upon the detection of her Covid-19 positive status, the patient was immediately transferred to the Covid Care Centre (CCC) at ETC-SIRD, Pukpui, located on the outskirts of Lunglei Town where she is receiving round the clock care from a team of medical professionals, he stated. 

The Deputy Commissioner further stated that the condition of the patient is stable and that currently, she is only showing very mild symptoms.  As such, it has been decided that she will continue to be treated at the CCC instead of being transferred to Zoram Medical College, Falkawn, which is the state’s designated COVID-19 facility, he added. 

Stating that kindness and sensitivity was the need of the hour, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to citizens to remain calm and refrain from posting speculative and inflammatory posts on any social media. He also reminded citizens to respect the privacy of COVID-19 positive patients during this difficult time, and refrain from disclosing their names, photos and any other details on any social media and other platforms.

Addressing queries from the media, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Thani Pachuau stated that at present, the District has 686 individuals being quarantined, with 77 persons under home quarantine, 433 at Government Quarantine Facilities and 176 at Community Quarantine Centres (Church halls). 457 swab samples have been collected so far, with 82 results already received from the laboratory of which one has come back positive, she stated. She also announced that the District has so far received almost 900 stranded returnees, with 112 more people from Maharastra slated to reach Lunglei town tonight.
