HPC WATER STORAGE PILOT PROJECT’ was launched yesterday at High Powered Committee Conference Hall, Chanmari, an initiative of Lunglei High Powered Committee which aims at rainwater harvesting and restoration of water reservoir.

This project was included in the HPC Lunglei District Annual Plan 2021-22 which was implemented by PHED LWSM costing Rs.100 lakh. Under this project, 6 Demountable Tanky for rainwater harvesting and two Water Storage Tank for Emergency Response to be used in case of fire emergency were installed and 8 water reservoirs restored.

Lunglei HPC Vice Chairman Pu Lawmawma Tochhawng handed over the charge of maintenance of these newly launched water storage units to the local VC and YMA.

In his launching address, Lunglei HPC Vice Chairman Pu Lawmawma Tochhawng stated that this project came into being when Lunglei District faced tremendous water shortage after the wildfire in April last year, and he hoped that it would be of immense help to the people. He requested the people of Lunglei, especially those living within the project site to take utmost care of these storage systems and called upon the people of the District to harvest rainwater to prevent water scarcity. He also applauded the PHE Department who had been working tirelessly for the success of this project.

Pu Lalduhawma Chhakchhuak, SDO, PHED, LWSM gave a powerpoint presentation  and report on the activity and overall plan of the project. Demountable Tanky for rainwater harvesting has been placed at Zobawk (40,000 litres)  Luangmual MAP area (20,000 litres), Govt P/S Venglai (20,000 litres), Lungpuizawl (40,000 litres), Serkawn Cemetery(20,000 litres) and Ramthar near Remand Home (20,000 litres), and Water Storage Tank for Emergency Response at Zotlang and Chanmari for fire emergency. In addition to these, restoration works of fountains(tuikhur) at Bazar Veng and Ramthar, and setting up of pumps and water storages at Pukpui, Lungmual, Theiriat, Zobawk N leh Zobawk S has been carried out under this project.
