Aizawl the 26th November, 2021

A review meeting on the COVID-19 situation in Mizoram, led by the Health Minister Dr R. Lalthangliana was held yesterday at the SAD Conference Hall, MINECO, Aizawl. In attendance were Aizawl Mayor Pu Lalrinenga Sailo, Chief Secretary Dr Renu Sharma, Addl Chief Secretary Pu JC Ramthanga, DM&R Secretary Pu Vanlalngaihsaka, Health Secretary Pu R. Lalramnghaka, Aizawl DC Dr Lalhriatzuali Ralte, and officials of H&FW, DIPR, Home, ZMC, IMA, MOT, MKHC and Aizawl City Local Council Association.

The meeting reviewed all issues related to the present Covid-19 situation in the State, including containment measures in place, status of vaccination across the state, stock of protective equipments & testing kits, and the situation at Covid-19 related healthcare facilities across the State.

At the meeting, it was highlighted that while the number of new Covid cases have reduced recently, the positivity rate remains high due to the symptoms based approach of testing currently being followed in the State. At 487 Covid deaths in the State till date, Mizoram has surpassed neighboring states such as Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. This remains an issue of great concern, and it was reiterated that cases of late testing, and refusal of a certain group of citizens to get vaccinated have contributed significantly to the rise in number of Covid deaths.

The meeting also discussed strategies and action points for effective implementation of the All Mask Campaign, which has been extended till 31st December of this year.  'All Mask Campaign' is a state-wide campaign to re-sensitize citizens on the importance of wearing masks to combat COVID-19, and was launched by the Health Minister on 11th October. It was highlighted in the meeting that Districts across the State are implementing the campaign on a mission mode, with positive effects and encouraging feedback reported from Districts.

IDSP Nodal officer Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma reported that during November 1st – 23rd, there have been 11,196 (Males – 5119, Females – 6077) new Covid-19 cases detected in the entire State, with 7136 patients discharged and 20 cases of Covid deaths during the same period. Of the new cases, 6309 people ie 56.35% showed symptoms of Covid-19. Aizawl District alone accounted for more than half (5670 ie 50.64%) of all the cases detected in November.

With regards to Covid-19 vaccination, Mizoram has given out a total of 12,65,203 doses. 92% of all eligible citizens have received the first dose, with the figure at 78% for second dose. Mobile vaccination teams have also been assigned in an effort to reach all citizens who cannot travel to designated vaccination sites for a variety of reasons.
