The newly posted Deputy Commissioner of Lunglei District, Pu V. Lalsangliana, IAS held a ‘Press Meet’ with members of the media fraternity in his office chamber at 12 noon today. Lunglei Additional DC Pu R. Vanrengpuia, SDO (S) Pu Lalnundika, DIPRO Pi C. Lalremruati were also in attendance. Led by the Lunglei MJA President Pu H. Lalthansanga, media persons engaged in both print and various electronic media were present at this meet.

Extending warm greetings and New Year wishes, the Deputy Commissioner thanked the media persons for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the Press Meet. Stating that media is recognized as the Fourth Pillar of the Indian Democracy after the executive, legislature and judiciary, he emphasized on the important role of the press as guardians of public interest, and encouraged the media persons not to hesitate in speaking out and championing the rights of the citizens. He also advised them to maintain the integrity of the press through unbiased and objective reporting. He also sought the cooperation of the media persons in educating and creating awareness amongst the masses on various Government schemes and flagship programs. 

Lunglei District has 9 Daily Newspapers and 3 Weekly Papers, with distribution spread across the length and breadth of the District. It is worthwhile to note that these papers are usually run as a one man show, with the editor/ owner looking after every aspect of his production right from news gathering and reporting to offset printing and distribution of papers. Electronic media, a comparatively late entrant to Lunglei has also progressed significantly along with the economic growth and development of the District. At present, there are two main Cable Network operators in Lunglei town – JB Cable Networks and LDF Cable Networks which serve thousands of households within the town and nearby villages.

Mizoram Journalist Association, Lunglei District was founded in the year 1972 as the Lunglei Journalist Association (LJA). The name change occurred in 2006 when it joined the Mizoram Journalist Association, the apex body for Mizoram journalists. The MJA Lunglei District has at present 27 members. The Lunglei District MJA has the distinction of being the only District MJA with a Sub-Divisional MJA under it, namely the Hnahthial Sub Division MJA. 

The Information and Public Relations Department is the nodal agency of the Government of Mizoram for disseminating information on various activities of the Government to the people through the media and providing feedback to the Government on important matters reflected in the media. The Department works closely with the Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) and has taken significant steps in promoting journalist welfare and facilitating the growth and development of the media industry as a whole.
