Aizawl, the 20th October 2020 : The Excise & Narcotics Department today destroyed seized liquor (IMFL) worth Rs. 56 lakhs today in Aizawl. A small official function organised in this regard at Bethany Multipurpose Farm in Phunchawng near Aizawl was graced by Excise & Narcotics Minister Dr. K. Beichhua where the IMFL bottles were opened and the contents emptied within the farm compound.

Speaking at the programme Dr. K. Beichhua said that the promises made during the elections to the people has become a reality by the enactment of the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act in 2019. Alcoholism is a social malaise that destroys lives, families and societies; he added. The fight against alcohol is not just the responsibilities of the Department, the NGOs and Churches but it is the responsibility of all citizens and they must be an active participant in the fight against this social evil, he further added.

The IMFL were seized after the prohibition law came into effect. A total of 5469 bottles of IMFL which included whiskey, rum and beer were destroyed today. The market rate of these contraband items was calculated to be Rs. 56,56,400 approximately.

Earlier today, Dr. K. Beichhua who also holds the Social Welfare Department portfolio launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign(Drugs Free India Campaign) at the Conference Hall of Mizoram New Secretariat Complex (MINECO). This Campaign will cover Aizawl District and a number of social media initiatives have been meticulously planned during the campaign targeted at the youth to take the message of Drugs Free India as widely as possible and to educate the vulnerable sections on the harmful effects to drugs.
