31st May, 2022: World No Tobacco Day was observed today at Lawngtlai District by organising a short function at SP Conference Hall, Lawngtlai with a theme of "Tobacco: Threat to Our Environment".

The observance organised by National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Lawngtlai District was chaired by Additional Superintendent of Police Pu C. Lalruatkima. SP Lawngtlai Pu Rakesh Paweriya and Medical Officer of District Hospital Lawngtlai Dr Lalrindika gave presentations on harmfulness of tobacco. Pi H. Vanlalmuansangi, Social Worker, NTCP highlighted provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 and achievement report of NTCP, Lawngtlai District.

During 2020 - 2021, 423 smokers who attended NTCP Clinic quit smoking, awareness campaign was organised at 7 schools and 3 churches, 8 numbers of training were conducted for Anti-Tobacco Squad and NGOs.

During 2020 - 2021, squad drive inspecting contraband cigarettes was conducted 28 times. Eight numbers of schools and its premises were inspected against violation of COTPA, 2003.

Officials from Police and Health departments, teachers and students of Southern Public High School, representatives of village council (VC), Young Lai Association (YLA), Lai Women's Association (LWA) and Mizoram Journalists' Association (MJA), Lawngtlai District attended the function. The gathering pledged to lead a tobacco-free life and to fight for the cause.
